ONUKA: History, Music, and Concerts

ONUKA is an internationally recognized Ukrainian electro-folk project that has given traditional musical heritage a contemporary voice. The band combines modern electronic production with authentic Ukrainian instruments, creating music that sounds both rooted in history and unmistakably current.

A New Vision of Ethnic Sound: The Birth of ONUKA

ONUKA was founded by singer and musician Nata Zhyzhchenko and sound producer Yevhen Filatov, also known for The Maneken. Nata's family history played an important role in the project: the name ONUKA, meaning "granddaughter", honors her grandfather Oleksandr Shlonchyk, a renowned maker of musical instruments.

The project's signature style grew from experiments with progressive electronic music and Ukrainian instrumental traditions. Trembitas, sopilkas, banduras, cimbaloms, and less familiar instruments such as the buhay appear alongside synthesizers and processed vocals. This bold approach established ONUKA as a major presence on the Ukrainian music scene from its earliest releases, including the EP "Look".
