The Georgian National Ballet: History, Repertoire, and Performances

Sukhishvili is more than just a dance troupe, over decades on stage, it has become a cultural phenomenon and a hallmark of Georgia. The dance company has managed to preserve the traditions of authentic Georgian dance to this day and generously shares them around the world. From Europe to Australia, the Georgian National Ballet Sukhishvili has captivated audiences on world-renowned stages across six continents.

A History Spanning Decades

The Georgian National Ballet Sukhishvili was founded in 1945 by choreographers Iliko Sukhishvili and Nino Ramishvili. Generations of the Sukhishvili family have kept the ensemble’s legacy alive, with Iliko Sukhishvili Jr. and Nino Sukhishvili Jr. leading the company today. The dance company began with 35 artists and its first performances in Georgia, and has since grown to 500 members, with its own folk instrument orchestra and worldwide recognition.

Concert Program: Passion and Tenderness

The troupe’s performance program is striking for its contrasts: daring male stunts, high-speed spins in the air and on the ground, jumps, and masterful saber fights give way to smooth and graceful female choreography. Particularly enchanting are the dance numbers in which men and women take the stage together.

Sukhishvili’s extraordinary performances are complemented by a collection of costumes made from exclusive natural fabrics, adorned with silk embroidery and embellished with gemstones and metal, as well as the accompaniment of a live orchestra playing original music on rare instruments.
